The Main Street program
Throughout the nation, communities are using the Main Street approach to revitalize their traditional commercial districts, whether they have officially designated Main Street programs or simply incorporate Main Street into existing economic development, historic preservation, city management, or urban and community planning programs. Whatever form a preservation-based revitalization initiative takes, the national network of coordinating and local Main Street programs provides action and support on all levels. The success of the Main Street movement during the past 28 years lies in its wide network on three levels:
- Hundreds of local, grassroots-based revitalization organizations;
- State, regional, and citywide coordinating programs that oversee local Main Street organizations; and
- The National Trust Main Street Center, which has guided the movement nationally.
All of these organizations work together to create preservation-based commercial district revitalization. They support each other and the movement, creating a system to share information and successes, network professionally, pursue training opportunities, and promote the Main Street approach to revitalize downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
Remarkably, while all of these organizations are completely separate entities, they work in partnership to achieve common goals. Because the responsibility for Main Street doesn't rest with one entity, the movement has grown strong over the years.
The experience of a thriving downtown district - rich architecture and history, personal service, local ownership, sense of community, fun and unique opportunities to visit, work, and play. Oklahoma's Main Street program has been pumping new life back into the heart of communities across the state. Combining historic preservation and downtown revitalization efforts with powerful economic stimulation, Main Street restores the core assets of our communities and enhances the quality of life for our citizens.
In 2007, Main Street Guymon earned recognition for commercial district revitalization by meeting standards for performance set by the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Main Street Center. Main Street Guymon joins 650 other Main Street revitalization programs nationally recognized as Accredited National Main Street Programs.
“The National Accreditation means the Main Street program is meeting our national standards of performance for what a Main Street program should be doing,” said Doug Loescher, director of the national Trust’s Main Street Center. “The organizations we name each year as National Main Street Programs are those that have demonstrated the skills needed to succeed in Main Street revitalization.”
The annual accreditation process evaluates commercial district revitalization programs based on criteria ranging from having an active board of directors and paid professional manager to tracking economic progress and preserving historic Main Street buildings.
“Rebuilding a district’s economic health and maintaining that success requires broad-based community involvement, active support from both the public and private sectors, and sound management,” said Loescher. “Having a solid organization at the foundation of that revitalization effort is so important to long term success.”
The organization’s performance was evaluated by Oklahoma Main Street Center, which is the coordinating organization for Main Street programs in Oklahoma.
